Kyle Gann reports David Dunn has won the $50,000 Herb Alpert Award. I blogged about Dunn's Chaos and the Emergent Mind back in February when I heard it on Gann's live365 station. Turns out that was a hint about Dunn ultimately winning the award. I will say, Dunn's piece is probably the most distant from "classic" classical music that I've blogged about. The Cal Arts awards website says this about his music:
Underlying all his work is a common regard for music as a communicative source with a living world.
Recent Alpert Award winners in music include Miya Masaoka, Vijay Iyer, Laetitia Sonami, Zhou Long, Steve Coleman, George Lewis, and Pamela Z. Of course, the music of these artists bears no relation to the music of the $10,000 Pulitzer Award winners. Will that change with the new Pulitzer rules?
Environmental music CDs on Amazon with the music of David Dunn. And to think that the genesis of the award was Herb Alpert's A Taste of Honey...
