emusic has a plethora of contemporary downloads this month. So for the first time, I'm listening to the music of Edward Campion via his Outside Music album. Interestingly, I'm having the same reaction I had to that of Milton Babbitt and Elliott Carter -- the music may be difficult but the piano works are of immediate appeal.
Does a lack of timbral complexity allow me to assimilate this stuff when chamber or orchestral music can be too overwhelming on initial listen? Does this mean I should revisit Carl Ruggles' Evocations, 4 Chants for Piano? And does Edgard Varèse have any extant piano music?
Campion:
...there is no distinction between acoustic sound, natural sound, or electronic sound. Everything is integrated with the full spectrum of all possibly sounds…I hope I am coming full circle, back to the essential musical material, it music that is made just for hearing.
