aworks ordered list :: new releases via rdio /rdio through the ages/

Many potentially notable releases on rdio this week although nothing obviously interesting. Since I'm late to start my new releases streaming and won't likely actually listen to everything, I'll pre-sort the list into my guess at what will be the most compelling music. I may also add some comments as I work my way through this week's program.

  1. The Rebirth Brass Band. Rebirth of New Orleans. Smoking hot arrangements although not overly improvisational. Fun, though. It looks like the group has been around for awhile.
  2. Charles Gerhardt Classic Film Scores. Classic Film Bette Davis. Sunset Boulevard. Citizen Kane. Elisabeth and Essex. Spellbound. Now, Voyager. Laura. I can't remember which movie is Now, Voyager. Is this the one where Bette Davis dies or the one where she has problems? From the movie, this quote "Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars," is ranked #46 in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie quotes in American cinema.
  3. Praxis. Profanation Preparation for a Coming Darkness. Burning Ambulance interviews Bill Laswell on the Praxis release as well as topics like the late guitarist Sonny Sharrock. 
  4. Fred Hersch. Alone at the Vanguard. Music and More: "The music on this album, recorded in early December of last year is subtle, melodic and reflective piano, drawing on jazz, standards and originals for a varied and thoughtful program."

aworks unordered list :: new releases on rdio #2 /hello dolly!/

Last week, I listed the new releases on rdio. The highlights turned out to be a re-release of Edgard Varèse music and some George Crumb works.

Since rdio doesn't yet believe in genres, I have to click through 19 pages to come up with this week's list:

Ok, 10 pages in and it's all live albums by Jefferson Airplane and Phish, and a zillion pop groups I've never heard of. Here's hoping something of interest shows up:
