I attended four hours of yesterday's Hot Air Festival, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Things didn't go exactly according to schedule but it was an enjoyable burst of contemporary music. SFCV review here. And I found that I may like guitar trios. Here's what I caught:
- Edges. Belinda Reynolds - Mobius Trio (Robert Nance, Mason Fish, Matthew Holmes-Linder). YouTube
- Unmanned. Ian Dicke - Friction Quartet (Kevin Rogers, Otis Harriel, Taija Warbelow, Doug Machiz). "Unmanned explores the ways in which recent developments of technology have enabled soldiers to distance themselves from the disturbing realities of war." Composer site.
- A Day in the Life of a Hysterical Soprano. Ada Gentile - Amy Foote, Anthony Porter. Fun fantasy.
- Chthonic Flute Suite. Cornelius Boots - Areon Flutes (Kassey Plaha, Jill Heinke, Sasha Launer). Well performed. Boots was founder of the raucous bass clarinet quartet, Edmund Welles. This piece was equally creative.
- Witch Wagon. Kevin Villalta - Mobius Trio. YouTube. Surprisingly interesting guitar performance techniques.
- Study for Mobius. Samuel Adams - Mobius Trio. A sparse work by the son of John Adams.
- Kriika. Kriika (Matthias McIntire, Justin Houchin). Violin and guitar duo. Not sure exactly what they ended up playing but worthwhile.
- Partita: Suite for Guitar and Percussion. Paul Lansky - John Zientek, Elizabeth Hall. Written in 2010.
- National Anthem/How To Disappear Completely. Radiohead/Doug Machiz - Friction Quartet
- Bon Voyage. Adrian Knight - Mobius Trio. Composer site NSFW.
- sometimes to destroy, one must first create. Nick Vasallo - Mobius Trio. Vasallo is a university teacher and has an extreme metal band named Oblivion. This piece was for three electric guitars.
- Summer Sketches. Elainie Lillios - Areon Flutes. YouTube
