While I still consider that Adams's conducting style makes him look like a rank amateur, he must be doing something right to get the BBC SO playing with such verve and enthusiasm.
Temporarily, the BBC has streams of Proms concerts featuring Steve Reich and John Adams. In a BBC message board, someone suggests attendance was not all that great at the John Adams concert. Eric Owens singing The Wound-Dresser may be the highlight of the two concerts although My Father Knew Charles Ives is not yet out on CD.
Adams: The title, My Father Knew Charles Ives, may have been unconsciously suggested by that of a Morton Feldman of similarly challenged authenticity, I Met Heine on the Rue Fürstenberg. Carl Adams, my Massachusetts-born father, did not in fact know Charles Ives.
