Been off-blog for the last week or so, but I'm back. Unfortunately, I'm back in cranky mode...
Although the new John Adams Nonesuch album may be getting good reviews, I'm disappointed that Nonesuch has put out the album with restrictions. Specifically, on rdio, the first movement of String Quartet is not streamable. The other tracks are streamable but not that one.
I understand why download services like emusic restrict tracks to a full album purchase but have no idea of the rationale to limit streaming.
As both a John Adams CD completist and a Rdio subscriber (and a listener who enjoyed the two works on the recording as played at Stanford), this puts me in an interesting situation. I'm all about listener advocay which implies I should boycott this recording, based on the new development.
I suppose, if I'm truly principled, I shouldn't even blog about my predicament since in effect, all this post does is announce a new John Adams recording.
As a compromise, I'll omit detailing my comments about how I sat next to the "Google gal" and her later-to-be fiance at an Adams Stanford concert, how I own every Adams CD although that claim involves some quibbling, how I would like to see greater visibility for the St. Lawrence String Quartet and ICE, and how it's a shame that the Stanford campus suffers from so much graffiti, as seen in the album cover for this release:
