I knew Bernard Herrmann wrote a string quartet and an opera (performance this weekend in Minnesota). But until finding a recording at Amoeba Hollywood this weekend, I didn't know he also wrote a symphony:
It doesn't have the mesmerizing qualities of some of his film work and but it's ok as long as one doesn't expect long, thematic, unfragmented development. Mostly, it strikes me on first listen as moody if not ominous.
Herrmann also wrote the score to Citizen Kane the same year.
