This week, it's the Music Diary Project:
The Music Diary Project is an attempt to document, over the course of one week, how we listen to music: when we listen, where we listen, who we’re with when we listen, and how we choose what we listen to...The idea is simple. For seven days this April, from Monday the 4th to Sunday the 10th, anyone who wants to take part will keep a diary of everything they listen to, and publish it online somewhere. How detailed that diary is, is up to the individual participants to decide.
Favorites marked with an asterisk.
- *Having Never Written a Note for Percussion. Goodbye 20th Century pt. 2. James Tenney - Sonic Youth. mp3 on iPod. Nothing like getting the morning commute off to an energetic start.
- Six. John Cage - Sonic Youth.
- *Four6. Wild stuff, well recorded.
- Piano Piece No. 13. George Maciunas - Sonic Youth.
- Piece Enfantine. Nicolas Slonimsky - Sonic Youth.
- Treatise. Cornelius Cardew - Sonic Youth.
- Blues of the Month Club. Music Place Sampler '95. Joe Louis Walker
- Introspection (Take 4). Monk Alone. Thelonious Monk
- Spanish Key. Miles from India. Miles Davis Tribute
- *String Quartet No. 2. American Contemporaries. John Harbison - Emerson String Quartet. Not exactly happy-go-lucky music so far today.
- String Quartet No. 4. Richard Wernick - Emerson String Quartet
- Descansos, Past. Jim Fox
- Goodnight My Love. Big Band #1 Hits. Benny Goodman
- *Fallout. Mazes. Moon Duo. rdio. I still love the Moon Duo/Wooden Shjips neo-psychedelic trance rock, simple as it may be.
- *When You Cut
- *Run Around. I like how the last 30 seconds of this fade into the ether.
- In the Sun
- *Goners
- *Fallout. Merits a re-listen.
- Till the World Ends. Femme Fatale (Deluxe Edition). Britney Spears. This is ok.
- Inside Out. This is not ok.
- Gasoline. Yawn.
- Genesis Hall. Late Night Tales - Midlake. Fairport Convention. As mixtape compilations go, this is ok.
- The Blacksmith. Steeleye Span. La la la la...
- Carnival. Sandy Denny. The voice, if not this song.
- *Christine's Tune. The Flying Burrito Brothers. "Now a woman like that all she does is hate you."
- These Days. Nico. Not the voice of Sandy Denny.
- Whispering Pines. The Band. These songs are not wearing well.
- *Am I Going Insane. Midlake. A bit plodding but the guitar solo redeems.
- Unravel. Björk. Can I say I prefer Britney to this?
- Sound Patterns. Extended Voices: New pieces for Chorus and for Voices Altered Electronically by Sound Synthesizers and Vocoder. Pauline Oliveros. UbuWeb via ekmeles
- North American Time Capsule 1967. Alvin Lucier. wtf. This is the oddest thing I've heard in awhile.
- *She Was a Visitor. Robert Ashley. Eerie.
- Christian Wolff in Cambridge. Morton Feldman. I remain a fan of song titles that include real musician names.
- String Quartet No. 3. Glass Gotkovsky Escaich. Philip Glass - Oasis Quartet. MP3 on MediaMonkey. From a new recording by the Oasis saxophone quartet, the baritone sax player must get quite a workout in certain sections.
- Everyone Is an Alien. Simple Psychedelic Pleasures. David Max
- Was Will Be. I'm switching to more of the album over at rdio. Wait, the local-ten-year-old has just hijacked the rdio account from another computer so she can sing along to Celtic Woman.
- Freeman Etudes II. John Cage - Marco Fusi. (Still) MP3 on MediaMonkey. This is good in very small doses. I can't imagine listening to the work in its entirety.
- Freeman Etudes III
- Freeman Etudes IV
- Dishpan 12. Mousetrap Plays Sun-Ra
- Saturnalia. I guess those are slide whistles toward the end.
- *Space Dust. Some intentionally screechy sax.
- *Angels and Demons at Play. Play the Music of Sun Ra & Stockhausen. Sun Ra - Respect Sextet
- *Lights on a Satellite
- Leo. Karlheinz Stockhausen - Respect Sextet
- Set Sail for the Sun
- The Grid (Remixed by The Crystal Method). TRON: Legacy Reconfigured. And it's back to the latest new releases on rdio.
- Derezzed (Remixed by The Glitch Mob)
- Klavierstuck No. 7. Wolfgang Rihm - Bernhard Wambach
