Cover of Now, Voyager (Keepcase)
Many potentially notable releases on rdio this week although nothing obviously interesting. Since I'm late to start my new releases streaming and won't likely actually listen to everything, I'll pre-sort the list into my guess at what will be the most compelling music. I may also add some comments as I work my way through this week's program.
- The Rebirth Brass Band. Rebirth of New Orleans. Smoking hot arrangements although not overly improvisational. Fun, though. It looks like the group has been around for awhile.
- Charles Gerhardt Classic Film Scores. Classic Film Bette Davis. Sunset Boulevard. Citizen Kane. Elisabeth and Essex. Spellbound. Now, Voyager. Laura. I can't remember which movie is Now, Voyager. Is this the one where Bette Davis dies or the one where she has problems? From the movie, this quote "Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars," is ranked #46 in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie quotes in American cinema.
- Praxis. Profanation Preparation for a Coming Darkness. Burning Ambulance interviews Bill Laswell on the Praxis release as well as topics like the late guitarist Sonny Sharrock.
- Fred Hersch. Alone at the Vanguard. Music and More: "The music on this album, recorded in early December of last year is subtle, melodic and reflective piano, drawing on jazz, standards and originals for a varied and thoughtful program."
- American Symphony Orchestra. Zemlinksy. Schoek
- Loretta Lynn. Gospel
- Stanley Turrentine. Flipped Out. My Cherie Amour
- Becker and Fagan. Before Steely Dan Vol. 1 and Before Steely Dan Vol. 2
- Tete Montolliu. A Distinctive Piano Style
- Charlie Parker. The Complete Charlie Parker Jam Session
- Count Basie. The Count Steps In
- The Pro Musica Antiqua. Anthology of Their Greatest Works
- Thomas Newman. The Adjustment Bureau. A new score for a new Matt Damon movie.
- Dom Andre Laberge. J.S. Bach: Suites and Partitas
- Stephane Grappelli. Someone in Love
- Luc Beausejour. J.S. Bach - Famous Works on Pedal Harpsichord
- Kenny Barron and others. Live at Jazz en Tete
- Various Artists. The Classical Guitar
- Count Basie. Ultimate Big Band Collection
- Gene Krupa. Six Pack
- Debussy - Tbilisi Symphony. The Essential Orchestra Works
- Gothenburg SO. Tchaikovsky
- Debussy Through the Ages. Chopin Through the Ages. Bach Through the Ages. Brahams Through the Ages. Mozart Through the Ages. Schumann Through the Ages. Liszt Through the Ages. Mendohlssohn Through the Ages. Schubert Through the Ages. Strauss Through the Ages. Beethoven Through the Ages. Tchaikovsky Through the Ages. Wagner Through the Ages. I'm sure I won't make it in my listening all the way down this list so thanks if you have read this far, anyway.
Last week's favorites included a seventies album by Mal Waldron and a recording of John Adams' Shaker Loops:

Rebirth is amazing live, better than they've ever come across on recordings. According to their website, Rebirth goes back to 1983, though I thought the went back even further than that. They play everywhere; basically, if you stand in one spot in New Orleans for an evening, Rebirth will eventually walk by on their way to another gig.

As my fellow Bay Area music bloggers can attest, I don't get out much. But I'm still astounded to hear this music for the first time...
