I'm listening to early piano music by John Cage, including his Jazz Study. I'm having a hard time letting go of my Cage-ian preconceptions but this work sounds conventional, at least by the composer's later standards.
Jazz Study is of doubtful authorship. A note on the envelope says: "Doris Denison [sic] sent to JC 6/29/89. She says it is JC. He has no memory of it.".
The use of jazz elements is quite un-Cage, though the repetition of a limited number of musical elements is typical of Cage's compositions from this period.

correction: yesterday's post used the word "jive" rather than "jibe." aworks apologizes for still being confused by the jive/jibe/gibe triplet. on the other hand, aworks stands by the aesthetic merits of pulse and timbre, up to and maybe even including its use in cage's jazz study.
