Rafael Behr describes Harry Partch in a review of the re-release on New World Records of his Collection:
Like most innovators, he becomes gravel on the road that most people drive on. So he was the first one through the door and the crowd tramples him. But nobody has done anything like that since.
I'm not sure who really followed this maverick; it is clear what he did was unique.

Wow...this is the first time I'm really looking over your blog in-depth, and I'm tremendously enjoying it so far. It's particularly nice to see that you don't distinguish between experimental popular music and "serious music" (how I hate that term).
The mentions of Partch and Zappa make me curious...are you familiar with the work of the Residents? They are particularly Partch disciples, and also devotees of Zappa and Sun Ra, but their music is its own animal. If you're not already, I expect you'd be very interested.
